Training Your Brain to Battle Your Negativity Bias

Image
The negativity bias can happen to anybody. In fact, most of humanity is predisposed to favoring negative sensory input and memories over the positive. This can often hardwire us for issues like depression and a lack of motivation. When we begin to believe that more negative things happen to us than positive things, whether that is true or not, it can be extremely discouraging. We start to feel like the entire world is against us, and no matter how hard we try, the cards will always be stacked out of our favor. However, when you actually think about it, the truth is that we undervalue positive experiences and tend to overvalue the negative ones. This can make it very difficult for us to move on and let go of negative events that happen to us. We find ourselves reeling from negative events for days and days, while positive events often become forgotten by the end of the day and we no longer find any value in them or their memory. In a way, the mind is a little bit of an ingrate like that...

What Are Your Wellness Needs?

Image
As we go about our busy lives, our wellness needs don’t often come to mind.     In fact, probably until you read the title of this article, it never even crossed your mind.     But even when we are well, we have needs that help us to sustain that wellness.      Have you ever given thought to what those needs are?  Your wellness rating is dependent upon your immune system, and what vitamins, supplements, and nutrition you provide for your immune system. Nutrition comes in the form of our daily intake of food, our eating habits determine the value of our daily nutritional intake.  What about vitamins? What role do vitamins and minerals play in our wellness needs?  More than what some of you have been lead to believe or understand.  The body’s ability to remain well under anything other than ideal conditions is a direct result of the nutrition received on a daily basis.  The mind’s ability to remain well is, ag...

Change Leads to Power!

Image
Change requires power. Any kind of change is a formidable challenge for most people. Yet the Lord asks us to change from our old ways and do things His way. Not an easy task!  Put off the old man and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. (Eph:4:22-24) Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. (Rom:12:2) In your daily world, especially in this hectic instant access global culture where technology changes by the minute and you have to be adapting constantly. Change is inevitable. You are being pulled in diverse directions and the older you get the less elastic you become. You get in the habit of doing things a certain way and become less tolerant to external demands to alter our lifestyle. Modifying learned responses to habitual routine tasks often causes stress and anxiety, especially in older persons. However, wh...

The Benefits of Being Well

Image
Wellness of the body occurs when all the body processes, physical and mental are functioning as their peak levels. What does it take to achieve a complete body wellness? It requires more than simply taking a trip to the gym, or a walk in the park.               The many benefits of being well make our lives more enriched and easier to live. We are able to reap the benefits of well thought out plans of diet and exercise many years into our life, just because we have taken the time to remain well and fit.     Your wellness is dependent upon your immune system, and one of the real benefits of a healthy, well immune system is the prolonging of the onset of many age-related diseases.  Conditions such as macular degeneration, Alzheimer’s, strokes, heart attacks, and overall feelings of good health depend upon a healthy immune system.             ...

Signs You are on the Path to Failure and What to Do About It

Image
Nobody wants to fail. Failure is one of the most humiliating experiences that a human can endure. Whether this is because of survival instincts or simple societal pressures, nobody wants to be seen as incompetent or incapable, especially when it comes to living up to their own expectations and following their dreams. Fortunately, there are many signs that you can take note of on your path to success that can be red flags for failure. If you heed these as cautionary symptoms that can be treated and worked on, then you will ultimately be able to overcome these issues and continue forward on your path to success. The first sign that you are on a path to failure is a refusal to take accountability for your actions or mistakes. A lot of us have a hard time admitting when we are wrong, but this can be a huge hindrance for success of any kind. If you don't admit that you are making mistakes, you will never have the right mindset to look at your mistakes objectively enough to correct them ...

5 Ways To Maximize Your Personal Energy Supply

Image
Different governments, officials, environmental agencies exhort us to conserve the energy we use in order to save the environment and sustain our continued existence on the planet. On a personal level I think that we also need to know how to conserve, focus and maximize our own personal supply of energy. We unconsciously dissipate and waste our energy on people, situations, thoughts, attitudes and events which do not serve us well. This leaves less space and energy for creating and attracting the kind of abundance that we want in our lives. Interestingly enough I've also found that as I conserve, focus and thereby maximize my energy, I tend to use less energy on craving and acquiring "stuff", but more energy focusing on what is truly important to me, thereby helping the environment. So here are 5 Ways to Maximize Your Personal Energy Supply. 1. Release Resistance Releasing resistance will affect a profound change in your level of energy and how you view the world. Resista...

Anatomy of an Anxiety Attack

Image
Anxiety attacks are our body's normal coping mechanisms against different stressors and distressing predicaments. In other words, these are chemical, physical and emotional reactions that are elicited by fear, apprehension, or shock.  These reactions also cause a  fight or flight response. Based on scientific studies, people automatically react to stress or stress inducing activities by either making a confrontational stance or making a decision to avoid the stress.   Pressure can come from an emotional problem in a relationship at home, demanding tasks and deadlines at the office, the dread of a forthcoming test, or the clamor for a game winning performance in a championship game. All these can produce constant anguish and even anxiety attacks if a person is not able to cope effectively with the stress. A person that is undergoing an anxiety attack often experiences a feeling of numbness or tingling, shortness of breath, dizziness, heightened palpitations, chronic sweati...

Working And Living Are Two Different Things, Don't Blur Them Together!

Image
When you're at home all the time, people have a way of giving you everything to do, with no regard for your job. It can be very hard indeed to keep your family life separate from your business when you work at home. In fact, this is one of the most common reasons home businesses fail and their owners come away all too glad to get back to the corporate grindstone. If you don't want to be driven away from home business, here's what you need to do to keep your family at bay. Work Time, Home Time. Make a schedule for when you're going to work and when you're not and stick to it. This doesn't have to be inflexible. It's very silly to only work nine to five every day, for example but, it still really needs to be there. Without a plan, you're inevitably going to go too far one way or the other and either work far too much or nowhere near enough. You might find it best to formulate a new plan at the start of each month or week, so that you can still respond to c...

Changing Your Definition of Failure

Image
It is extremely difficult to discover that we fall short in any way, shape, or form. When we find that we don't measure up, it can be a real hit to our self confidence. When our self esteem suffers, it can cause issues further down the line with depression and other serious consequences. Without confidence, our personal relationships and view of ourselves suffers tremendously. Some might argue that it is society that puts too much pressure on us to succeed. We are given a tailor made definition for success from a young age. We envision success as having a lot of money and doing whatever it takes to be at the top. However, that vision of success is not often personally crafted and tailored to align with our passions. That can be dangerous, especially if you are a creative and spirited person who thrives with an abundance of self expression and innovation. It seems that the world is cruel to creative types, but this can be avoided in some capacity by changing your perspective. It is ...

Blueprint for Leadership: How to Be a Better Leader

Image
If you were to build a house, you would begin with a blueprint. This blueprint proves useful because it contains more than directions on how to build a house. It also describes the finished house.  So, what does this have to do with leadership? Last month I asked an audience of leaders to tell me the characteristics of an ideal leader. Their answers were (in the order collected): A good listener, enthusiasm, passion, shows appreciation, a visionary, role model, trusting, integrity, organized, knowledgeable, credibility, persuasive, charisma, team building, clarity of purpose, problem solver, attitude of service, leads by example, patience, willing to act without complete knowledge, understands followers, consistent, empowers other people, and adapts to change. I'll add that this is essentially the same list that I receive from other audiences when I ask this question. From this comes some useful insights. 1) Notice what the list contains. All of these characteristics relate to the ...

3 Things you want to know about Cholesterol

Image
You wouldn't judge a book by its cover, would you?            You would want to open the book and read part of it to get a better idea about what is going on, right?       Well, judging a book by its cover is what happens when you look at LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and                decide that this is the only or even the best  indicator of heart disease. Worse yet, you are told you MUST lower your LDL cholesterol level. Naturally produced by the body, cholesterol is needed for a variety of functions.   1) Your body uses cholesterol to make testosterone and other essential hormones and is one of the best health and youth enhancing strategies for aging men and women.   2) As you age your body naturally starts to lose its ability to produce as much testosterone and you start to lose energy, strength, sexual desire and sexual capacity. Because the fact is cholesterol alone...

The Top Seven Questions to Ask Yourself When Planning for Success

Image
When you want to plan to succeed, sometimes the most important thing to do is to really know yourself inside and out. In order to do so, there are some important key questions that you should ask yourself, not necessarily in order of appearance in this article. The answers will help you to pave the way to your success! 1. What am I passionate about? If you don't know what you are passionate about, then you need to stop right now and figure that out. If you spend your life working toward something that doesn't spark your passion, then you are going to have a hard time motivating yourself to succeed. 2. Where am I right now? Be honest with yourself when answering this question. Evaluate where you are in life and how close you feel to achieving your goal. Don't use it as a way to get down on yourself. Simply figure out where you are and how far you have to go before you are where you want to be. Consider the resources you have and what you need to acquire and then co...

Paving the Way Toward Success by Changing Your Lifestyle

Image
The sad fact of the matter is that when you want to succeed, there are often a lot of changes that you need to make before that success is able to become a reality. Fortunately, there are many things that you can do, starting now, to prime yourself for success and begin to pave the way to a successful lifestyle! To get on the right path, you need to begin with the fundamentals. Without tending to the basics, you are ultimately going to be overwhelmed and consumed by the tremendous amount of work it takes to become successful at any given task. When we aren’t taking care of ourselves properly and providing ourselves with the tools we need to succeed, we are asking for trouble. Success is elusive enough without giving it more reasons to evade us! To begin with, when we aren’t taking care of ourselves fundamentally, we are not giving our bodies the physical resources that they need to succeed. Getting enough sleep at night, making sure to eat a nourishing breakfast, and exercisin...

Benefits of Online Workouts

Image
If you want to lose weight, get in shape or reduce stress, there are many benefits of choosing an online fitness program over a live personal trainer or gym membership to reach your fitness goals. I'm not advocating that online training is better than in person training with a personal trainer. An experienced, well trained personal trainer is worth it if it's in the budget for you even if it's only for a few sessions. This article will focus on the most important aspects of online fitness training and why it provides an excellent solution for maintaining your overall health and wellness. First and foremost, online fitness training is convenient, it is accessible from your home or office at any time of day. In addition, online workouts are interactive and dynamic. If you need guidance or support, you can email the fitness program, and in most cases, receive an immediate answer to your question. Various other tools to enhance your learning and ensure your success are al...

You Are Not A Victim; You Are Not Alone

Image
If you don't feel good about yourself, you have to fix it. There's no other way around it. No other way to say it. You can't raise confident kids, have a healthy relationship, or get satisfaction from your job if you don't. This comes from someone who didn't, for most of his life, feel worthwhile. Many books come from the perspective of an expert, someone who already has a healthy sense of self worth, which I believe immediately sets up an alienating perspective between them and us, those who know and the rest of us who struggle with this issue. They assume they know better. They may think they know better, and have a worthwhile plan, but we know what it is really like, we have experienced and not just judged our self defeating behavior. We all have varying degrees of self doubt. A person can be wildly successful in their life, and still have deep seated feelings of worthlessness. There is a fear of discovery that others will come to see what's behind the ...

There Is Always Hope For Anxiety

Image
As if COVID-19 wasn't bad enough. We've all been cooped up for over 70 days now. When we do go out, we're all wearing mask. It's surreal. Now add to that, this past weekend of protesting, looting, violence, devastation and destruction. Again, surreal. WHAT IS GOING ON? How do we cope. The thoughts that can rum through a person's head. I have taken for granted that some may be more prone to anxiety. I have tried to keep things positive, encouraging everyone. But some are experiencing pain, fear and debilitating anxiety.   Anxiety can be a life altering occurrence. It can happen without our knowledge and can change a life forever. That is not to say the changes are for the worse. If we are aware, early on, that we are experiencing stress and dealing with anxiety then we have a great opportunity to promote positive behavior. This positive behavior can then dominate our lives. There are varying effects anxiety has on the human body, mind and spirit. Anxiety can ...

Dreaming Big, Living Large

Image
"I'm going to be an astronaut." "I'm going to be a movie star." "I'm going to be the President." "I'm going to own a chocolate factory!" What were your childhood dreams? We still have the ability to dream big, no matter how old or young, no matter where we live, and no matter what our family believed and taught us to believe. However, most of us need to clear the cobwebs off our imagination. And that's just what we're going to do. Why is dreaming so important anyway? Dreams play a significant role in determining the grandeur or constructiveness of life. You've heard of the "glass ceiling." Dreams are the glass ceiling we create for our own life. We can create a ceiling just above our head or somewhere out at the edge of the Milky Way! When that glass ceiling is very low, it often is because we've allowed our dreams to be created for us, either by others or by our unconscious mind. Who do you k...
